Captain Vernazza is a native of Connecticut and graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics. She is a Board Certified Senior Professional of Human Resources (SPHR) with an Executive Master’s Degree in Business Administration (EMBA) and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA). She is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program, Joint Forces Staff College, U.S. Naval War College and was a 2015 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Seminar XXI Fellow. Captain Vernazza is a Department of Defense Protocol Expert having served as the Chief of Protocol for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Commander U.S. Special Operations Command, Chief of Naval Operations, Commander U. S. Fleet Forces Command, Commander U.S. Atlantic Fleet and Commander Naval Surface Forces Pacific. 

As a Senior Navy Human Resource Officer, Captain Vernazza served as Director Total Force Management & Chief of Staff at Naval Sea Systems Command in the Washington, DC and led her team through the tragedy and recovery of the Navy Yard Shooting in 2013. She served as the Director of Total Force Management at Navy Region Southwest in San Diego, California, commanded the United States Military Entrance Processing Command 7th Battalion and was Commanding Officer of the San Diego Military Entrance Processing Station in California. Her other military assignments have included Director of Training at Naval Network Warfare Command in Little Creek, Virginia; Officer-in-Charge, Personnel Support Activity Detachment Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia; Congressional Liaison Officer & Deputy Director of Community Relations for Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, in Norfolk, Virginia. Manpower, Personnel & Training Officer at Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet in San Diego, California; Flag Aide to Commander Naval Base Pearl Harbor & Commander Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, Hawaii; Operations & Training Officer at Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the Haitian and Cuban migration of 1994-1996; and Mathematics Instructor & Athletic Coach at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, RI. 

Captain Vernazza serves on the Naval Academy Alumni Board and was a voluntary Board Member for Navy Federal Credit Union. She is authorized to wear the Joint Staff Badge and her military awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, (2) Legions of Merit, (2) Defense Meritorious Service Medal, (5) Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, (3) Navy Commendation Medals, a Joint Service Achievement Medal, (2) Navy Achievement Medals, and various other campaign and unit awards.
