Obituary (VA): Howard Alan Levin '74

Posted on 10/04/2023

Howard (Howie) Alan Levin  (June 27, 1952 - September 21, 2023)

Howard (Howie) Alan Levin was born in Philadelphia, PA on June 27, 1952. He is preceded in death by his parents, the late Dorothy and Martin Levin. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judy Levin, his daughters, Andi (Scott) Mitchell and Tami (Dan) Morgan, his brother, Joseph (Eileen) Levin, and his sister, Rachel (Eric) Marcus, and 4 nephews. His pride and joy were his 5 grandchildren, Macey (16), Eden (13), Blair (9), Will (8), and Zach (5).

His early years were spent in pursuit of baseball, golf, and attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.

Howie received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy but opted to study civil engineering at Stevens Tech. He met his beloved Judy at a summer job in 1972 and married on June 15, 1974. He and Judy moved to Boston where he studied structural engineering at MIT (M76). After graduating, he worked at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission until 1981. Additionally, Howard was the former Sr. VP and COO at Tera Corp/Tenera, LP in the nuclear power industry, before launching a private consulting firm, Synergy, in 1992.

In the late 1990s, Howie attended Christianity 101 at McLean Bible Church. He asked many questions, and drawing on his Jewish background and study, Howie saw the prophecies of the Old Testament fulfilled in the life of Jesus. He saw what he explained as a “science experiment before his very eyes” as his daughters’ lives changed in response to their own walk of faith. These changes added to his curiosity in Christ whom he then embraced as His Lord and Savior. He dove headfirst into seminary, graduating in 2005 with a degree in Ministry Leadership from Capital Bible Seminary.

After leaving the corporate world in 2008, Howie served in and alongside a variety of ministries and churches. He was a founding board member of the Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Initiative, now known as Reset 180, an initiative to mobilize the church and community to stop human trafficking. He launched several nonprofit organizations including Embrace Loudoun, to address the needs of the underserved and Apollos Leadership, where he mentored young pastors and helped churches discover the vision the Lord had for them. His year on staff at McLean Bible Church as the Director of Outreach and Community Partnerships in 2014 helped him gain strategic relationships which led to ministry involvement in a variety of spheres.  He responded to a challenge from a local pastor to begin the Washington Prayer Gathering while on staff at MBC.

In 2015 he launched OneHeartDC, a consortium of about 1,000 churches and ministries, that link arms to make Christ known in the Washington, DC area. OneHeartDC facilitates and coordinates churches and partnering organizations working together, allowing each to maintain its unique identity.  He envisioned that pastors and their congregations would link arms in unity and reconciliation to create gospel impact. He was also a man of justice, wanting people to be treated with the love and respect they deserved. He had a relentless drive and endless ideas that filled his head at every turn.

The Lord was deeply at work in Howie’s life during his short illness, putting to words that Jesus’s love for him did not diminish because he was unable to physically serve during that time. A week before he passed away Howie shared with Judy that he knew that his only assignment left was to stay close to Jesus.

Howie was a family man, always devoted to making life fun taking many vacations, coaching sports teams, and always making sure there was ice cream in the freezer. He made life fun for his 5 grandkids. He had a never-ending supply of ideas to entertain and engage them, which often led to rather rambunctious fun. Howie enjoyed sailing, golf, fishing, traveling, photography, and his dogs. He also loved any and all apple desserts but insisted that they be served a la mode.

Howie’s passion for Jesus led him to share his faith with anyone who would listen up until his last days. If you or someone you know would like to understand the hope that Howie had and how to be sure you will spend eternity in heaven, please visit everyperson.com.
