Jay Savage was born in Amarillo, TX on February 23, 1939 and died June 23, 2017. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Eula Margaret and Emmitt Durward Savage, He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Susan Holston Savage and his children, David Savage (Linda) of Austin, TX; Wendy Burns (Joe) of Apex, NC and step-daughter, Eryn Elola (James) of Diablo Grande, CA. He was very proud of his grandchildren – Joseph, Danny and Maddie Burns, Jonathan and Kayla Savage. Jay attended Amarillo High School and was active in ROTC. He was a true Texas cowboy and competed in state rodeos as a bull rider until his appointment to the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1961. He went on to receive his MBA from Michigan State University. During his 20-year naval officer career, he served aboard the USS Canopus and the USS Goodrich. He used his skills as a logistical engineer for the Navy in many Ports of Call including Spain and Portugal. In Brazil, he served as a Naval Liaison to the Brazilian Navy. His final Navy assignment took him to the Pentagon in Washington DC. After retiring from the Navy in 1981, he joined a Washington DC defense contractor where he worked up until his second retirement in 2002. He and Susan then migrated south to Lake Hartwell, SC where he could practice his lifelong passion for fishing. They moved to Greenville, SC in 2010 and are members of Unity of Greenville. He will be missed. He was an extraordinary gentleman. Celebration of his life will be held at Unity of Greenville in Taylors on July 6, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. A heartfelt thanks to the gracious, caring staff at GHS LTAC.
