Project-based learning enhances the experience of the midshipmen and allows them to apply the theory and knowledge they learn in the classroom.”

Project-Based Learning

The complexity of today’s naval weapons and engineering systems demands a multidisciplinary approach to the Academy's core engineering curriculum. 65% of each graduating class entering the Navy must have a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics major. Project-based learning is a proven means of attracting and retaining students in these academic disciplines.

Project-based learning is accomplished by offering midshipmen "hands-on" opportunities for investigation, data analysis, and project development. These activities facilitate effective learning and higher retention of concepts and knowledge.

Private gifts provide continuing program support and assist in expanding project-based learning to more majors and midshipmen at all class levels. Capstone courses for seniors are funded in part through private gifts.
