These unique opportunities are fostered in several ways to include both structured and non-structured environments including participation in, among other things, military training, varsity athletics, Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs), club sports, professional organizations, and academic groups.

Midshipmen Activities Center

The Naval Academy, with the assistance of private support, seeks to expand Dahlgren Hall's capability to provide the Brigade with a suitable facility in which midshipmen can engage in club meetings, group study and other forms of social activity. An expanded MAC would mirror many of the capabilities afforded student unions at other colleges and universities.

Background

The Naval Academy provides a many unique leadership opportunities for virtually every midshipman.  These take many different forms, in both structured and non-structured environments including participation in military training, varsity athletics, Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs), club sports, professional organizations, and academic groups.

The institution’s ability to provide a suitable facility in which midshipmen can engage in club meetings, group study and other forms of collaboration social activities, is important to the both he social and professional life of the Brigade.

Current Midshipmen Activities Center (MAC)

A portion of the existing Drydock Restaurant in Dahlgren Hall has been renovated to provide a location, in close proximity to Bancroft Hall, where up to 180 midshipmen can meet to engage in academic, extracurricular, and social activities.  However, the limited space constrains the number and types of activities that the facility can accommodate.

Future Midshipmen Activities Center (MAC)

Given the extensive unoccupied footprint remaining in Dahlgren Hall, and the size of the Brigade compared to the relatively small size of the current MAC, the opportunity to expand this space and create a much more capable activity center in the Yard would represent a significant upgrade for Brigade activities. Once completed, the expanded MAC will allow for over 800 midshipmen (nearly 20% of the Brigade), to simultaneously make use of the expanded activities center.
