Obituary (MD): Mrs. Korena (Michael C. Jones '88)

Posted on 04/18/2023

Korena Sue Jones  (April 5, 1967 - April 9, 2023)

Korena Sue (Miele) Jones, 56, of Sykesville, Maryland, passed away on April 9, 2023. She was born to parents John Miele and Dolores Bruso, on April 5, 1967 in Springfield, Vermont. She grew up in Ludlow, Vermont, before moving to Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1982, where she met the love of her life, Michael Jones. They were engaged in April, 1983 but delayed the wedding while Michael attended the U.S. Naval Academy. They were finally married on May 25, 1988.

Korena was proud of her role as a “Navy Wife,” and raised three children (Chris Jones, Jacob Jones, and Laura Jones). She could turn any house into her family’s home, a feat which she repeated in Georgia, Connecticut, California, Washington State, Virginia, Hawaii, and Maryland.

Korena took pride in her immaculately clean and organized home where many friends, neighbors, and relatives found comfort. She always provided room for one more guest at the table or a place for a tired friend to spend the night. Because she always saw the goodness and value in everyone she met, regardless of their challenges or their differences, many struggling teenagers and young adults found refuge in her care. She created beautiful scrapbooks to capture and savor every moment of her family’s life. She loved to cook, nurtured a collection of orchids, and was an avid fan of cooking reality shows and legal dramas. Her true passion was being a cheerleader for her family who drew strength and confidence from her love.

Once her children were grown, Korena worked in a variety of customer service roles where she made easy conversation and connected with everyone she met. She spent much of the recent years supporting her husband’s passion for SCUBA diving and working at the family business, SOS Diving in Eldersburg, Maryland.

Supported by her family and her medical team, Korena waged a long, courageous battle with mental health challenges and disordered eating. Although she eventually succumbed to the disease, she will be remembered for a life filled with joy and love.

Korena’s memory lives on in the hearts of her loving husband and three children, her sister Barbara Liljengren, her grandson Cody Jones O’Connell, and her many other friends and family. She was preceded in death by both of her parents.

A funeral will be held at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD 21784, on Friday, April 21 at 1 P.M. at 6416 Sykesville Road in Sykesville, Maryland, followed by burial at Lake View Memorial Park in Sykesville, Maryland <https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/1982997/lake-view-memorial-park>.
