Captain Robert Kenneth Kaufman USN Ret, 99, of Vincent Hall retirement community, McLean, Virginia died February 10, 2019. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years Patricia T. Kaufman. Captain Kaufman was a 1940 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. Upon graduation he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific areas during World War II. When the war in the Pacific ended, Admiral Lockwood took the then Lieutenant Commander Kaufman, as Aide and Flag Lieutenant, with him to witness the surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. After serving in the Navy, Bob and Pat moved back to their childhood home town of Clarion. While in Clarion Bob served positions including president of the town council, Clarion Hospital board, chairman of the Conservation District, the executive board of the Boy Scout Council, and the Historical Society board. In 2000 he was one of three honored by the Clarion Area Chamber of Business and Industry. He received the Francis Palo Lifetime Achievement Economic Developer Award, Don Lewis Citizen of the Year Award and Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2008 Bob and Pat moved into Vincent Hall Retirement Community, McLean Virginia. He is survived by four children, Roberta K. Kaufman, (Frank), Karl E. Kaufman, (Karin), Carolyn A. Kaufman and Dorothy K. Connell (Mickey). A son, John C. Kaufman died in 2011. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Vincent Hall, Mclean, Virginia on May 13, 2019, at 1000 hours. This will be followed be a private service at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis at 1400 hours.
