Nimitz Football Field- The new astro-turf football
field is directly out in front of Nimitz Hall. This is the site for football
practice and home games. Built in 2003, it is a great location for NAPSters
to hone their playing skills. Other sports teams (lacrosse, soccer, etc) also
use Nimitz field throughout the course of the year.
By the end of Indoc, students know Nimitz field well. It is where M/C's spend every morning PTing with a Gunnery Sergeant until the sun comes up. The base of the astro-turf is tiny black rubber pellets which stick to everything when they get wet. If it has rained, students get covered in them. Nimitz field is very nice though. It is never muddy, the "grass" doesn't pull out, the lines are permanent, the rubber makes a nice running surface, and the part students appreciate the most during Indoc....it is the only place on base that is safe from the geese! Since they cannot eat the turf, they don't even bother going on it, which means that they don't do other more messy things on it. Any other place that you sit in the grass, you can expect stains on your clothes, compliments of the geese grease.Rumor has it that the 1/4 mile track will be rubberized soon as well. For now, it is just asphalt.
